About The Project

Road kill is one of the major threats to the wild animals where roads/highways run through the Indian protected wildlife areas. To determine the severity of road kill, WGNF undertook a project “Documentation of Herpetofauna Road-Kill”.

The documentation study has been planned for 3-5 years. Five places have been identified for the survey. Every monsoon period, road kill survey will be undertaken on the same track.  Road traffic will also be recorded to determine the mortality rate in relation to road traffic.

As a pilot study, NH 91 highway (19 km stretch passing through Brahmagiri Sanctuary) of Kodagu District was selected for the road kill survey. Continuous documentation of road kill was carried out for ten days. Within the short period unbelievable records of 121 kills were documented.
