Sparrow Nest

To conserve the chirping house sparrow, WGNF took up this project in Kodagu district of Karnataka. Initializing the artificial wooden nest, this project was started on the occasion of World Sparrow Day 2017.
About The Project
It is a long term programme to increase the sparrow population in urban areas. Many reasons augment the drastic decline of sparrow population, mainly loss of roosting and breeding sites and presence of chemical residues on food grains and insects.
Project Impacts
By the end of first year, all the nests were occupied by sparrows and we observed breeding couples and fledging chicks. This success impelled the organization to extend the nest initialization programme all over the Kodagu district.

As a result, WGNF spread the sparrow nest programme in three places (Somwarpet, Shrimangala, Ponnampet ) of Kodagu. Sparrow nests were distributed to school students. They were also educated about House Sparrows. Occupancy of nest by sparrows in all the nests is being recorded periodically.

As a part of this project WGNF has come up with an ideal idea of sparrow nest adaptation. Here, interested people can come forward to get and install the nest in their backyard. Organization will also guide the interested parties about necessary care for sparrows.
